Students from Presentation College Athenry have reached regional finals in one of Ireland’s largest fashion competitions. ‘Junk Kouture’ which is a recycled fashion competition inspired these teenagers to construct an ensemble made from 100% recycled materials.

Two teams from Presentation College Athenry have been rewarded for their creativity and craftsmanship with places in the western region final. They will compete against 78 other participants in an attempt to reach the grand final in the renowned 3Arena. ‘Fallen Angel’ and ‘Spill the Tea’ were the outstanding designs that qualified.

‘Fallen Angel’ is a gothic angel themed dress made from canvas, glass, nuts and bolts, chicken wire and bin bags. In order to make it angelic the pupils channelled their inner artistic selves and produced realistic wings made from cardboard boxes which their chosen model will wear. The team members who created this dramatic look are Erin Dolan, Onaleigh Earls, Caitlin Cummins and Isabel Kennedy.

The other successful design is ‘Spill the Tea’. This creation has used one of the nation’s favourite drinks as a clothing material. Using boxes of tea bags, cotton wool, newspaper, wire and bin bags they styled a ruched dress. A feature piece of this marvellous design is the addition of a miniature tea set. The team of Kirsten Judge, Maeve McLoughlin and Moya Geoghegan gave extreme detail to their unique design.
