From 4th June, for the first time in the history of the Athenry Community Council Lotto, the local community and the Athenry diaspora will be able to play the lotto online. Lotto envelopes will still be available from the usual outlets, however due to the current restrictions there will only be one collection point. Participants in the Athenry Community Council Lotto can get their envelopes from The Shopping Basket, Church Street, Athenry and drop them back before 6pm on a Thursday. The draw will subsequently take place electronically and all rules for the Jackpot, Match 3 and Lucky Dip remain the same.
Chairperson of Athenry Community Council, Cllr Shelly Herterich Quinn commented, “The Athenry Community Council Lotto helps fund the upkeep of a number of community facilities and the local magazine ‘Athenry News & Views’. When the lockdown was implemented everything came to an immediate halt. It was obvious to me something pressing had to be done.”
“I had worked with Matt Lawless and his team at Clubforce when getting Monivea RFC online and it was the natural thing to do to reach out to Matt for advice on online lotto. People have always enjoyed playing the lotto for a good cause and we are delighted to be able to bring the Community Council Lotto online and indeed international now. The committee of Athenry Community Council were very supportive of the idea and I want to thank long serving member Willie Killeen for his commitment to the lotto and his help in getting the ‘Online Lotto’ rolled out.”
“The Athenry News & View magazine keeps the community informed of all local goings on. There are wonderful articles and many pictures of families, friends and neighbours. We think it’s time to bring back these essential services so that, with the continued support of the residents, we can keep the community facilities going. A sincere personal thank you also to everyone in Athenry who continues to support the work of the Community Council.”
Athenry Community Council is 100% volunteer led and is presently looking for new members to help continue the work of the community council and represent for their area. The Community Council uses the proceeds from the Lotto to fund the running costs of the Athenry News & Views Magazine and the following facilities:
- The Community Hall
- The Raheen Playing Fields
- The Town Park
- The Allotments at Knockaunglas
- The Handball Alley and the 1916 Commemorative Garden at Swangate
