In 2019, the Athenry Community Council along with the project partners Amicitia commissioned DMAU to help Reimagine Athenry and create a community-led vision for the historic town.
DMAU, are a Dutch-based studio for public space design and research. Through public consultation and online surveys, they worked with the community of Athenry to map out a future framework for the town based on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of local residents.
The plan has been developed within the context of the 2022 Local Area Plan and 2008 Draft public Realm Plan all of which recognise the rich potential of Athenry with its connectivity, history and strong sense of community. It is hoped that Reimagine Athenry is the first step in defining a future direction and shared vision for the town.
By first understanding and mapping out the key concerns of the community the design team from DMAU then put together a set of key recommendations which can help Athenry realise its potential and attract new businesses, families and tourists to the town in the years to come. By working together and collaborating on this shared vision of the town we can make Athenry a great place to live, work and grow old in.
Cllr Shelly Herterich Quinn added “As the chair of the Reimagine Athenry steering committee and chair of Athenry Community Council, I’m delighted to welcome the findings of the feasibility study which was undertaken with great enthusiasm by the residents in Athenry. The findings are truly forward looking and depict an Athenry of the future where both residents and visitors can look forward to enjoying together. Our aim with this document is to have input to the Local Area Development Plan and to use this document to seek appropriate funding for development projects for Athenry.
I want to thank the GRD, LEADER and Athenry Community Council for providing the funding to conduct the study. I want to thank all the participants of the study and of course Amicitia and DMAU for their constant guidance and support.”
The findings from Reimagine Athenry will be presented to the community of Athenry at a special event on Friday, February 28th, 7 – 9pm. All are welcome to attend at the Amicitia Social Hub Old Church Street Athenry H65 NR28.
