Prior to Christmas, Athenry’s own Conor McNamara launched his much-anticipated book ‘Liam Mellows, Soldier of the Irish Republic: Selected Writings, 1914–1922’ at the Galway Mechanics Institute.
As Athenry residents will know, Mellows was at the forefront of the republican movement in Ireland from its inception. Following the 1916 Easter Rising, he escaped to New York where spent four years as the IRA’s representative including attempting to import arms into Ireland.
Mellows’ opposition to the treaty, and his subsequent execution in December 1922, were among the major events occupying the minds of Athenry people almost a century ago. The book is available online and in all good book shops.
