The ALDI Community Games National Area and Voluntary Awards is undoubtedly the most prestigious event on the Community Games calendar and is growing in popularity all the time. This year the function was held in the plush surroundings of the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Tullow, Co. Carlow.

The awards are organised to honour, acknowledge and reward the voluntary workers for their contribution & dedication to Community Games at Local, County & National.  On the night Athenry picked up the 2019 Galway Community Games Best Area Award, this is Athenry ninth time winning the Best Area Award, a fantastic achievement for Athenry.

Among those who received a well-deserved individual Volunteer Award for his dedicated commitment over the last 40 years was Athenry Community Games Chairman Joe Hansberry, It is only through having valuable volunteers like Joe that we can provide the opportunities for young people of Athenry to participate in healthy and friendly competition in a multitude of sporting and recreational activities.

The National Youth Award also went to Athenry and was awarded to Sinéad Lyons. Sinéad received the award for her work as a volunteer with both Athenry & Galway Community Games.

We would like to Congratulate our Athenry Community Games & Parish Sports Committee Joe, John, Peter, Stephanie, Linda,  Sinéad  & Myles, the team managers, coaches and all the other Athenry volunteers who work so hard, the local schools who support Community Games, all the local clubs who entered teams, our main sponsor Athenry Credit Union, we would also like to thank Athenry GAA Club for the use of their club grounds in Carnaun, Tranquillity Leisure & Spa for the use of the pool and finally all the Boys & Girls that took part in 2019.
